Why Wellness is More Than a Buzzword

We often hear the word "wellness" tossed around in commercials or on social media, usually paired with a face mask or a new gym membership. In my journey as a counseling intern, I’ve come to realize that wellness is more than a buzzword. It goes so much deeper than a temporary "treat yourself" moment, and is the very heart of how we heal, grow, and show up for ourselves every day.

For me, wellness isn't just about the absence of stress; it’s about a proactive, holistic balance across every part of our lives. It’s about looking at the "whole person" rather than just the problem at hand.

The Six Dimensions of a Balanced Life

One model that has really resonated with me lately is the Six Dimensions of Wellness. I love how it breaks our complex lives into six simple areas: Occupational, Physical, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, and Emotional.

When I look at this model, it’s a beautiful reminder that for our wellness to be complete, every area needs a little bit of focus. It’s all connected. If my physical health is struggling, it ripples into my emotional state; if I’m finding fulfillment in my work, it boosts my spiritual sense of purpose.

Practicing What I Preach

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a "grinder." I have a lot of responsibilities, and I tend to just keep pushing until I wear myself down. In the past, I’ve struggled with isolating myself when things get stressful because I hate to "burden" others.

But part of my own wellness journey has been learning to recognize my "check engine" lights - those early signs of distress like irritability or difficulty focusing. I’ve had to learn that taking a break isn't a luxury; it’s a responsibility.

Here is what "intention" looks like for me lately:

  • Giving myself grace: Not putting myself down if I miss a workout after a long, busy week.

  • Reconnecting: Having a regularly scheduled check-in with my best friend where I can be completely honest.

  • Simple Joys: Carving out time, even just one day a week, to do something I purely enjoy like reading for fun.

  • Getting Grounded: Replacing a stressful moment with a simple walk to help process my emotions.

A Renewed Sense of Priority

Whether you are a fellow professional or someone navigating your own path, I encourage you to sit with yourself for a moment. Think about those six dimensions. Where do you feel strong? Where do you feel a little out of balance?

Wellness is an active process. It’s about making choices that move you toward a more meaningful and successful existence. I’m learning to stop putting myself on the back burner, and I hope you can do the same.

What is one small thing you can do for your "whole self" this week? Maybe it’s a five-minute walk, a quick text to a friend, or simply giving yourself permission to rest. Whatever it is, do it with intention. You too deserve to feel balanced.
